[ Mako makes a habit of trawling the network in the spare moments she allows herself. Much like Raleigh the week before, she immediately brings things of note to the marshal's attention. ]
[ There aren't words that will suffice for what Raleigh feels - but if there's ever a turn of phrase for it, suit up is probably the most succinct, and to the point. ]
[ his voice is tight because being yanked through that rift forced him to put his bum arm into use to keep his dog safe. it wrenched it all the wrong ways and burns like a sonuvabitch. but he doesn't go into that, instead cutting straight to business. ]
CONTACT: lara.croft@compass.net MESSAGE:This may sound a little strange, but I'm Lara Croft, a friend of Alayne's, and she's asked that we look after one another while we're trapped in hydroponics. I promised her I would do my best to keep both you and Max safe.
[ It's late and they're about to make their breakthrough with the tram but it hasn't come without a price. Some of the others have grown agitated with the lack of food and sleep. But even beyond that, something's off. (For a moment, she'd seen something— ]
[ it's a question even in a statement, because they've just struggled through their fight with that beast of a monster and though that hard part is done, they need to finish cleansing the air. he's exhausted and sore and keeps seeing movement out of the corner of his eye when it shouldn't be there. ]
[ honestly, he hadn't been expecting any kind of thanks; hadn't really seen her once they'd opened up the rest of the ship and had to take that flaming beast of a monster down before getting through the portal. it'd been a whirl wind, that was for sure. ]
[ it's an hour that he usually wouldn't be up if his body clock weren't so out of whack, but it's been just a little over forty-eight hours since fighting knifehead and finding himself on the platform and add to that sleeping most of his second day in Zelien away -- it's like jet-lag.
so it's three in the morning and it's ridiculous to be up when he knows he's normally as dead as a log at this hour. but he's been checking the usernames ever since alayne told him what she did, and at least this distracts him from outright messaging his kid brother. ]
CONTACT: hercules.hansen@compass.net MESSAGE:sir, not sure if you remember me. we met in manila during the three-jaeger drop
[ there is a slight hesitation before he types out: ]
last december.
[ because he's still running on time from back home and it's been only about two months and some change since he was formally introduced to the hansen brothers, herc and scott. ]
[ he openly stares at the name that winks up at him when he gets the message; after that trip on the Ishimura, returning to a thin veil between worlds— Herc finds himself questioning what is real and what isn't.
he hadn't seen Yancy Becket, but he knows Raleigh did. knows who his son saw, who he saw himself. and maybe that's half the reason that instead of messaging him back, he flips over to audio. it might be three in the morning, but Herc wasn't sleeping anyway.
last december he types out. and Herc sure as hell knows that last december wasn't when that man died. ]
[ master chief— an unlikely ally, as far as Herc was concerned. he hadn't set out to look for people to work with, but if he was going to trust anyone up here outside his rangers, it might be that man. ]
[ Chuck visits her unprompted on the fourth day after awaking in the graveyard and that, coupled with her interactions with Ranger Yancy Becket, puts Alayne's mind on the marshal. After a day's worth of waffling, she decides to contact him. He's the first person she's reached out to willingly since returning to Zelien. Everyone else has been left to chase after her like some ghost hiding between the walls. ]
CONTACT: alayne.stone@compass.net MESSAGE:Marshal Hansen. Tis I, Alayne Stone.
[ this is the second time he's had the dead contact him this week, barring the hallucinations of the Ishimura. there's a kneejerk reaction, a bullshit that is horribly reminescent of his son (but when you drift with someone, you tend to pick up some of their habits).
but Herc has never been that person, and he wasn't going to start now. for the second time, he swaps to audio: ]
[ So she's hide and seeked Chuck out and they've made a run to the hardware store and she's still prickling over the clusterfuck that was whatever that was on the network. ]
Supply run's completed. I'll be returning to the classroom in ten.
[ BECAUSE APPARENTLY OUR COPILOTS ARE GOING ON A DATE TO THE SODA SHOP. ]
[ There had been a brief period during the whole "powerswap" debacle when Mako and Raleigh took to sharing a bunk. It had been an attempt to bridge the gap opened between them and, for a while after the ghost drift had been restored, they'd continued the habit.
On the sixth day of week eight, that habit stops suddenly. Then a few days later: ]
CONTACT: mako.mori@compass.net MESSAGE:Sir, may I have a word?
[ Herc has hardly been sleeping, since that week. keeping himself busy, as though it might make up for everything he said and did. he hasn't spoken about it with anyone, likely won't. Chuck hasn't asked, and Herc won't volunteer the information. the closest it came was with Yancy. ]
[ it was stupid. stupid to call them out like that, stupid to talk about it in the open; Herc has never been fond of secrets, and sure, he'll be the first to come out swinging and to do it loudly. but they've taken civilians, they've taken everything they've worked hard to build and destroyed it. this wasn't war, this was the people in charge trying to put everyone back in their place. ]
We're in prison. Nobody's thinking of this the right way.
lt. ghost, military. hasn't named his affiliation. probably taken mid-campaign from where he's from. permission to engage further, sir?
[ Raleigh doesn't just mean engage in the sense of physically coming into contact with the guy - he means pursuing an alliance of sorts, particularly with one so new and untested by the city. The important thing is that they know about a possible wildcard, and if this is old news then it's only confirmation and further investigation needed for the other man's merits. Raleigh hadn't lied to Ghost when he'd said there were enough military types here to throw rocks at, but he hadn't given any names outside of his own rank.
The military groups in Zelien are circuitous, on the other hand; what the PPDC knows will likely be known to the UNSC crew in due time, at least with regards to the city's happenings, and what the UNSC knows, the Ishimura crew would know — and so on. It's a small pool. Everyone knows pretty much everyone else, because their types are the incredibly paranoid types.
The lieutenant came in with a big-ass high-powered rifle, jumpy as only their sort can be; a lone wolf grows dangerous the longer it's left alone.
Better we ease the guy in and let him leave on his own later, than risk a cannonball and get ourselves hit later on. ]
[ Herc hasn't been following up with anyone who isn't in his immediate circle; the closest he's come is tentatively agreeing to this gongshow Xavier had thought at everyone the week before. the thing with Raleigh is that, while he's military, he's got enough civilian under his belt to be able to feel these people out in a way he, Chuck, and Mako couldn't.
